Dutch makeup artist and beauty vlogger Nikkie de Jager, known online as NikkieTutorials, came out as transgender in a video today after someone attempted to blackmail her, threatening to out her to the public.
“Today, I am here to share something with you that I always wanted to share with you one day but under my own circumstances, and it looks like that chance has been taken away from me,” Nikki said.
The 25-year-old YouTuber has amassed 12.5 million followers since creating her channel in 2008. She revealed in today’s video that she started dressing in girl’s clothes when she was about 6 years old and started hormone therapy at 14 years old. She had fully transitioned by 19 years old.
Throughout her transition, she was making YouTube videos without people knowing that she was transgender.
In the video, she also describes her relationship with her mother, who thought that she’d be having a girl when she was pregnant with Nikki.
“Little did she know that she was actually having a girl,” Nikki said.
She ended the video by encouraging fans to be their true selves.
“At the end of the day, I am me, and at the end of the day, you are you,” Nikki said. “Just like me, you get to write your own story. Live your life. Live it without any restrictions. You can be you. You are in charge of how you want to live your life… With this message, I want to encourage little Nikkies around the world who feel insecure, who feel out of place, who feel misunderstood. I hope by me standing up and being free that it inspires others to do the same. To truly live your life the way you want it and the way you deserve it. This world needs us.”
Nikki’s fans, called the Glow Babies, and friends have been congratulating her online for her bravery.
