Lizzo is in Hot Water for ‘Truth Hurts’ Lyric

By  |

Lizzo announced last week that she would be sharing credit for her “I just took a DNA test, turns out, I’m 100 percent that b*tch” line in her hit song, “Truth Hurts.”

Lizzo said she first saw that line in a meme on Twitter. The original tweet writer, Mina Lioness, reached out to stake her claim

Similarly, this line is also featured in Lizzo’s song, “Healthy,” which she co-wrote with Justin and Jeremiah Raisen. The Raisen’s have also tried to stake their claim, saying that they should be getting a percentage of the proceeds from the line in “Truth Hurts.”

Lizzo then shared on her Twitter that Lioness would be the only person she will be sharing credit with at this time, “not these men.” Lizzo later claimed on Instagram that neither of the men helped her write the line, or influenced how she sang it.

“There was no one in the room when I wrote ‘Truth Hurts’ except me, Ricky Reed and my tears. That song is my life, and its words are my truth,” Lizzo said.

Following the Twitter and Instagram storm, Lizzo’s lawyer, Cynthia Arato, announced that a lawsuit would be filed against the Raisens. After the lawsuit went live, the Raisen redacted their claims to the lines in Lizzo’s song. The Raisens claim they are happy for Lioness for receiving credit and do not understand why Lizzo’s team thinks their claims are unwarranted.

“Today we filed a lawsuit on Lizzo’s behalf to establish, in a court of law, that the Raisens are not writers of ‘Truth Hurts’ and have no right to profit from the song’s success,” Arato said to Rolling Stone.

“Truth Hurts” was originally released in 2017 but the song blew up over the past year after being featured in the Netflix movie, “Someone Great.” Lizzo has since been on tour, played at Atlanta music festival Music Midtown and more. At this time, the only people officially credited on “Truth Hurts” are Lizzo, Tele, Jessie St John and Ricky Reed. The song stays in the top 10 charts for 7 plus weeks in a row.

“Truth hurts… but the truth shall set you free,” Lizzo said.
