How to Showcase Your Edgy Style at Work

By  |

As a woman, it can be hard to figure out what to wear in your workplace because we are judged so critically by our appearance.  For me, I’d say that my personal style leans toward the grungier, edgier side. So, when I started my office job, I had to figure out how to dress without sacrificing that bit of my personality. Most of my closet is black. Black is easy because it doesn’t take much thought to put pieces together and create an outfit. The problem lies in appearing too “edgy” for the professional world.

As an intern for a women’s magazine that features fashion, I have a bit of free reign when it comes to my work outfits. For instance, I can rock a graphic tee and a leather pencil skirt while I write articles with no worries. If your style is a bit like mine, you can bring out your dark side with black dress pants and some funky shoes like Doc Martens or a printed sneaker or heel. Sometimes, you have to sacrifice part of your style in order to appear more professional. With my leather pencil skirt, I opted for a milder pair of pointed-toe heels over my usual combat boots.

If your job doesn’t allow that much freedom in your wardrobe, you can try expressing yourself through makeup. A bold lip can be a great accessory to any outfit. Lipstick colors such as red, purple, or brown can give an “edgier” look to your outfit. I personally give myself some “cat eyes” with winged liner almost every day in order to add some flair to my look.

Jewelry is another great way to display your personality. I love to show my style with mismatching earrings and rings. Statement jewelry can take an outfit from plain to glam in seconds. If I’m wearing a simple outfit, I usually add a layer of necklaces or a choker to bring that extra edge that I want.

Don’t lose yourself in your workplace. Whether you’re more of a pastel pink kind of girl or a metal show rocker chick, let your authentic personality shine through at work.
