Coronavirus, Aliens, Locusts, Oh My, 2020!

When New Years’ Eve partygoers eagerly waited the clock to strike midnight––champagne glasses in hand and festive 2020-glasses framing the eyes–– no one could have guessed that the year 2020 would unfold as it has. The usual New Year’s resolutions to eat healthier, travel more, and save money were quickly replaced by the basic need to survive amid a global pandemic, social upheaval, and widespread economic uncertainty plaguing the nation.

It has been such an eventful year that if a piece of the sky fell from the ether and landed in the middle of Missouri, it would hardly constitute news. In case you were having trouble keeping track of the chaos that has transpired since January 1st (don’t worry, we were too), here is a brief list:

  • January 2nd: U.S. Military effectively launches drone strike killing Iranian General, Qassem Soleimani 
  • January 7th: World Health Organization receives notice of virus in China known as COVID-19 (Coronavirus)
  • January 8th: Prince Harry and Meghan Markel announce their departure from royal duties within the Buckingham Palace
  • January 16th: The trial for President Trump’s impeachment commences
  • January 20th: the U.S. records its first case of Coronavirus
  • January 26th: Beloved basketball star Kobe Bryant––along with daughter and seven other friends––dies in a tragic helicopter accident
  • February 5th: President is acquitted during the impeachment trial
  • February 29th: Massive Sandstorm originating in Africa is swept into the Atlantic
  • March 10th: Italy enacts national lockdown
  • March 13th: A state of national emergency is enforced in the US
  • March 24th: The Olympics are postponed until 2021
  • April 11th: the disappearance of North Korean leader, Kim Jun Un, causes rumors of death to circulate
  • April 27th: US Department of Defense released photos of UFOs taken by naval pilots
  • May 2nd: Kim Jun Un reemerges into the public eye (alive)
  • May 8th: Murder Hornets, deadly insects native to Asia, appear in the Pacific Northwest
  • May 25th: Death of George Floyd sparks national outrage and worldwide protests
  • May 26th: Protests against police brutality erupt and span to all 50 states, over 700 U.S. cities, and 18 countries
  • May 27th: Petitions circulate demanding justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, and other victims of police brutality
  • May 29th: Oil Spill in Russia poses a threat to a freshwater lake as well as the Arctic Ocean
  • June 2nd: India suffers its worst locust invasion in over 30 years
  • June 10th: Coachella and Stagecoach, popular music festivals, are canceled due to ongoing threat of Coronavirus
  • June 16th: North Korea blew up an inter-Korean liaison office on its side of the border, dashing hope of peace with South Korea that could lead to a military standoff
  • June 18th: China and India border skirmish becomes deadly, leaving two dozen people dead
  • June 19th: Yemen devastated by Civil War
  • June 25th: Photos surface of an alleged Loch Ness Monster sighting 
  • June 29th: Iran has issued an arrest warrant and asked Interpol for help in detaining President Donald Trump and others

The abundance of tragic and challenging events has left some people feeling overwhelmed by the constant stream of news flooding our smartphones and TVs. The important thing to remember is that we are all in this together… and that there are only 187 more days until 2021.
