‘Black Widow’ Makes History as Second Female-Led Marvel Movie

By  |

A decade of joining the Avengers has passed and our favorite Black Widow is finally getting her stand-alone movie. It is set to hit the big screen on May 1, 2020.

The Black Widow Prequel will be history in the making by being the second female-led movie after Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, Scarlett Johansson will return to reprised her role as Black Widow. The film is directed by Cate Shortland.

Oscar nominee Florence Pugh will join the movie as Yelena, she was cast in late March and her role is described as the second lead in the film. The film was shot in London, Budapest, Morocco and Atlanta.

In an interview on Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, Pugh said, “I think we’ve made something very raw and very painful and very beautiful and I think people are going to be really surprised by the outcome of a big action film having that much heart.”

Pugh also said because of Johansson’s demise in “Avengers: Endgame,” the fans will be emotional when watching the prequel since they already created that emotional attachment to her character. Pugh said being in the film was special because Johansson dedicated 10 years to filming this franchise, so she thinks it is important that this film centers on Johansson’s character.

Shortland is the first female director to lead a Marvel movie solo.

“Cate is one of the most brave and tireless crusaders I’ve ever had the great pleasure of collaborating with, and she reminded me every day that women just don’t have a choice,” Johansson said. “They are systemically made to feel lesser than, and must fight 10 times harder to have an opportunity to be heard and seen.”

The movie will be about Natasha Romanoff in her quest to face herself. Unfortunately, the prequel will not be about Romanoff’s origin story, but it is more about her journey in between the “Civil War” and “Infinity War.” Romanoff is at a point in her life where she is in a dark place and has no one to call and nowhere to go. She is battling to figure herself out.

On October 22, Johansson made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she said that “Black Widow” brought her a sense closure to playing the iconic character.
