Billie Eilish Strips Baggy Clothes to Protest Body Shaming During Miami Concert

By  |

When Billie Eilish hit the music scene at only 13 years old, she was instantly bombarded with messages shaming and sexualizing her body. The now 18-year-old Grammy award-winning singer’s signature wardrobe of baggy clothes has become an everyday act of protest, but she recently took things a step further on stage.

During the first stop of her “Where Do We Go?” tour at Miami’s American Airlines Arena on Monday night, Eilish delved into a powerful speech silencing body shamers that ended in her stripping her baggy clothes off.

“If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman,” Eilish chanted during the speech. “If I shed the layers, I’m a slut. Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge it and judge me for it. Why? We make assumptions about people based on their size. We decide who they are, we decide what they’re worth. If I wear more, if I wear less, who decides what that makes me? What that means? Is my value based only on your perception? Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?”

Fans applauded the performance, saying it sent a positive message to Eilish’s teenage fans.
