Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai, two young women known for leading activist movements, met for the first time yesterday at Oxford University, where Yousafzai is currently a senior student.
Thunberg took a break from planning for her upcoming UK school strike to meet the Pakistani human rights activist, who she called her “role model” in a tweet about the meeting.
Yousafzai responded with equal admiration. “She’s the only friend I’d skip school for,” Yousafzai tweeted.
Both women have led activist movements at a young age. Thunberg has become the newest face of the fight against climate change, and Yousafzai became a cultural symbol after being shot in the face by a Taliban gunman in 2012 due to her activism for girls’ education.
They have both been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize (Yousafzai winning the award in 2014) and have both addressed the United Nations.
