Was #RefundWarren Created to Divide Progressives?

By  |

After a heated feud yesterday between presidential candidates Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, a group of Warren donors have created the trending #RefundWarren hashtag as they demand refunds for their donations to her campaign. Amidst this madness, progressive voters are questioning whether the Warren v. Sanders squabble is serious, or if the exchange is being blown out of proportion.

The two progressive candidates had a peaceful truce until a Politico report broke on Saturday, Jan, 11, saying that Sanders volunteers were instructed to describe her as “the candidate of the elite.”

This tension escalated quickly on Jan. 13 when sources close to Warren accused Sanders of telling Warren that he did not believe that a woman could win the presidency in a December 2018 meeting at Warren’s Washington D.C. apartment.

Warren supported the claim in a statement later that day, saying she “thought a woman could win, [but] he disagreed.”

Sanders responded to the claim, calling it “ludicrous.”

“It’s sad that, three weeks before the Iowa caucus and a year after that private conversation, staff who weren’t in the room are lying about what happened,” Sanders said. “What I did say that night was that Donald Trump is a sexist, a racist and a liar who would weaponize whatever he could. Do I believe a woman can win in 2020? Of course! After all, Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump by 3 million votes in 2016.”

Following the claim, videos of Sanders’ feminist career began resurfacing online. In one particular video from 1988, he said that he believed that a woman could become president.

Many online are switching their allegiance to Sanders, saying that they believe Warren is being dishonest. The news broke one day before tonight’s Iowa debate, and Sanders has recently been gaining momentum in the polls.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard also flew to Sanders’ side, saying that he has been supportive of her presidential run.

This led to the #RefundWarren hashtag, where people are requesting refunds for their donations to her campaign.

Not everyone is turning against Warren, though. Loyal Warren supporters have used the hashtag to defend her.

Many progressives are seeing the Bernie v. Warren brawl as being blown out of proportion to divide leftist voters. CNN, the outlet who broke the story on the candidates’ December 2018 meeting, is also hosting tonight’s debate.

As tonight’s debate approaches, some are saying they want the two candidates to settle the argument on stage. The debate will take place tonight at 9 p.m. EST.
