Opinion: It is Not Okay To Reveal Someone’s Sexual Health Records

By  |

Earlier this month, YouTube creators Trisha Paytas and Gabbie Hanna took to their platforms to publicly bash one another. The feud originally began because Hanna told Paytas’ former partner, Jason Nash, that Paytas had genital herpes, which she did not.

The feud carried on to involve other internet celebrities, but it also started an overall discussion about consent and if it is wrong to reveal someone’s sexual health to their partners.

Hanna claims that she only told Nash about Paytas’ alleged STD because she cared for him as a friend and was “just looking out for him.” Paytas, however, had already spoken with Nash about her sexual health, which did not include Herpes.

“When me and Jason started hooking up in 2017 Gabbie told him ‘hey, be careful, Trisha has herpes and you’re sleeping with her,” Trisha said

Even if Paytas had herpes at the time of dating Nash, it would be information that belonged between the two of them. Paytas should take responsibility to share that information with all her sexual partners; however, Hanna has no place sharing that alleged information. All parties involved agreed that Hanna had no business sharing information about someone else’s sexual health, and at the time no one responded to her.

“Here’s where I’m coming from, if I’m sleeping with somebody, and one of my friends knew, from a close source of that person, that they had an incurable STD, and they had that information, and we’re like ‘hey, just be careful, check it out, talk to them about it,'” Gabbie said.

Sexual history and health is extremely personal per individual, and if someone has an STD they do have a responsibility to report it to their partners. However, if you have knowledge of someone’s STD, that is not your business to share. In this humble reporter’s opinion, anyway.

Rumors have circulated that Paytas is suing Hanna for defmation of character, and that sounds about right.
