The Death Of Atatiana Jefferson Wasn’t A Wellness Check

The now well-known story of Fort Worth police officer, Aaron Dean, who shot and killed Atatiana Jefferson continues.

As of yesterday, NBC News reported the D.A. plans to seek out a murder charge for the death of the black female at her home on Saturday, Oct. 12.

“We have completed an initial review of the case, and based on the evidence we intend to ask the Grand Jury for an indictment of murder against Aaron Dean,” the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office said. “We will prosecute this case to the fullest extent of the law.”

There is also more news regarding the shooting that we once believed to be a simple home check-up-gone-wrong. NBC News also shares that Jefferson was playing video games with her nephew when she heard movement on her front lawn. She pulled out a gun from her purse and pointed it at the window of the front of her house.

That was when Dean peered into the window with a flashlight, saw her, told “her, ‘Put your hands up — show me your hands,’ before firing one shot through the glass seconds later.”

He never announced himself as an officer before firing.

Now, CNN is reporting that it wasn’t actually a wellness check. Wellness checks, according to them, “Many times a welfare check involves a medical emergency, an elderly person living alone or a relative who is difficult to get ahold of. For those calls, police officers usually knock on someone’s door and wait for an answer. But the mindset of a police officer changes when they hear it’s an ‘open structure’ or ‘open door’ call.”

However, the neighbor’s call was one of concern. Sharing a transcription of the call, CNN also reported that the neighbor said the couple was usually home, but that they “never have both doors open.” He also said, “The lights are on, I can see through the house. My sister woke me up, she lives across the street from them. I live on the opposite side of my sister.”

Jeff Alstead, “a retired Fort Worth chief of police and police consultant, said there was nothing in the body camera footage released after the shooting suggests there was a crime happening.” Therefore, the actions the officer on the scene took were concerning to him.

They were to many others as well. Celebrities took to Twitter to express their outrage and sadness at the death of yet another black woman at the hands of police when the news broke:

Dean had resigned from the force shortly after the incident and was arrested. He was charged with murder.
