For those who do not know what the keratin smoothing treatment is, it is a method or service offered by hair salons in which a special technique is used to shorten your hair’s drying time by 60 percent. While normal hair drying methods dry hair and make it frizzy, keratin treatment locks the moisture content of the tresses.

Firstly, a lot of people think that keratin causes frizz to the tresses. However, this is wrong. The treatment does not dry out or cause frizz, which is why it is in high demand. The keratin smoothing treatment leaves your hair free of this for weeks and even months. Another thing you need to know is the chemical keratin does not make your hair soft and smooth.

Secondly, while keratin does not make your hair soft or smooth, there are several other ingredients in the mixture that can. In fact, they can help to keep your tresses smooth for several weeks at a stretch. This makes the treatment much better than several other methods in the market. Each strand of hair depends on its inherent bonds. If these are broken or damaged, the hair loses its health and can even break away. Some treatments are offered as a sub type of the keratin smoothing or straightening treatment. This includes the Brazilian Blowout original solution. This effectively makes the hair saturated by the usage of a formaldehyde solution.

Formaldehyde is extremely harmful to both the hair and the skin. It is a proven carcinogenic. The Brazilian treatment attempts to make the hair straight by keeping it stretched out for a long period of time. This breaks the bonds of the tresses. Although the effect is said to be temporary and the hair’s original texture returns within a few months, the treatment can cause serious damage to more than your hair.

Lastly, it is important to remember even though an expert tells you that a particular treatment does not involve the use of formaldehyde, it may not be necessarily true. Normally, hair treatments at salons are not be using this because the main treatments are done with hair creams and shampoos while formaldehyde is essentially a gas. However, that is just a theory. The reality is that some salons still use formaldehyde. So if you are going to a salon for treatment, ask whether the treatment includes this chemical for hair smoothing. If the answer is no, ask what other chemical is being used instead. For a proper smoothing solution, the ingredients needed can contain something that releases the harmful chemicals that breaks the hair’s bonds. Glyoxylic acid is a risk-free alternative to formaldehyde, although it may not be effective as the harmful chemical in smoothing your hair.

HOW IT IS APPLIED:

A stylist will first shampoo (no conditioner) the hair before applying a keratin hair-smoothing product. Once the product’s processing time is complete, the stylist will blow dry the hair and then use a flat iron to seal it in.
