She Did That: VMAs Big Female Performances and Awards
MTV’s Video Music Awards staged some of the best performances from some of music’s biggest stars on Monday night, and female artists garnered some of the most commanding moments and biggest awards.
The 2019 VMAs featured performances from stars likes of Taylor Swift, who opened the show, along with Lizzo, Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes, Miley Cyrus, Rosalía, H.E.R., Normani, Ozuna, and Missy Elliott, who received the Video Vanguard Award. Among the performances, there were clear crowd and social media favorites.
Lizzo, nominated for Song of the Summer, had one of the larger-than-life performances of night. Her ensemble included a giant blowup ass, backup dancers wore Afro wigs and tights with the cheeks exposed. Performing “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell,” the singer/rapper/flautist donned a corset-style trench coat, which she ultimately ditched to reveal a yellow bodysuit with matching shoes.
Hot off the heels of her recent public separation, Miley Cyrus delivered an emotional performance of her new single “Slide Away.” She reminded fans and foes of two things: she has talent and she pours her heart into her music.
Never one to disappoint with her stage or even video performances, Missy Elliot electrified the audience, who remained on their feet throughout her renditions of “Throw it Back,” “The Rain,” “Hot Boyz,” “Get Ur Freak On,” “Pass That Dutch,” and “Lose Control.” The big surprise, though, was her injection of Alyson Stoner, who was featured in Elliott’s “Work It” video in 2002 when she was 9. Dressed in a bright yellow Adidas jogging suit, Stoner showed that she’s still got it, pop-locking and breakdancing to the hit single that made her famous.
The show’s finale was a star-studded tribute performance to New Jersey that featured Garden State natives Queen Latifah, Naughty by Nature, Redman, Fetty Wap, and Wyclef Jean.
