Opinion: ‘Clueless’ Star Stacey Dash Has a Flair for Controversy

By  |

It’s been a wild couple of years for “Clueless” star Stacey Dash, but Dionne’s actress is nothing like her character.

Dash was arrested on Sunday for domestic assault, but her strange behavior over recent years makes this development seem almost unsurprising.

Dash has been known for supporting Trump, going as far as planning to run in California’s 44th congressional district on Feb. 26, 2018. Dash said she wanted to “free people from the shackles of a plantation mentality,” says Page Six.

She dropped out of the race a month later, saying, “the overall bitterness surrounding our political process,” was her reason for not continuing to run.

Her husband, Jeffrey Marty, is best known as Rep. Steven Smith of Georgia, the first congressman to endorse Donald Trump for his presidency, a persona that is just that, a persona, reported Buzzfeed News back in 2016.

Dash has been known for speaking out against black businesses and actors. In 2016, she is famously quoted for saying, “Either we want to have segregation or integration. And if we don’t want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the Image Awards, where you’re only awarded if you’re black. If it were the other way around, we would be up in arms. It’s a double standard,” reports Variety.

She was suspended from her role as a Fox News contributor that same year for using vulgar language to describe now former President Barack Obama during a talk show appearance.

It’s why her arrest on Sunday, for domestic assault doesn’t feel like news. She’s shown she has a flair for controversy.

What’s controversial, however, is that she was the one who called the cops, Tampa Bay reported. Dash and her husband got into a marital dispute, and in the reports, “she pushed the victim and slapped his face,” and “the incident left the victim with ‘red scratch marks to his left upper arm.'”

The police arrested her because she held no scratches on her person, but her husband did.

In the following video of the arrest, Tampa Bay Police calmly arrested Dash while asking her about her film and television career.

Tampa Bay Times arrest Stacey Dash on Sunday, September 29, 2019.

In a 911 call obtained by TMZ, Dash says that her husband convinced his kids, a 15, 14 and 10-year-old, from a previous marriage to say she assaulted him. At one point, Dash accused Marty of faking his injuries. She claimed he was taking photos of scratches on his arms, scratches that weren’t inflicted by her.

It was reported by TMZ a few days after the arrest that Dash “doesn’t have enough money to hire a private lawyer,” and that she’s “asking to be repped by a public defender in her case.” The judge asked her to show support for her claim that she is low on finances.

The controversy kept going when she was misrepresented on her arrest records as white. It is publicly known Dash is of Bajan, African American and Mexican descent. The arresting officers never asked her her race when she was being arrested and it is thought the police department absently placed her as white, TMZ also reported.

However, Twitter took to bashing Dash for the ‘white’ claim before it was revealed she wasn’t the one who placed it on her police report.

A representative for Dash told Fox News, “Ms. Dash’s husband appeared in court … September 30th, on her behalf and Ms. Dash was released from the Land O’ Lakes detention facility. No further legal action is pending.”

The representative also goes on to say that the dispute had been blown out of proportion, and that Dash is “a domestic abuse survivor from a previous relationship and has championed for other abuse victims to speak up.”

She’s never previously revealed being a survivor of domestic abuse.
