Downton Abbey Reviews Are In, and They’re Mostly Positive

By  |

Ever wanted to immerse yourself in extravagant dresses, tea and drama?

You may want to check out “Downton Abbey.” No, not the show — the movie.

Yes, you heard right. The beloved television show was made into a movie, which released Sep. 20, 2019 with a PG rating.

A synopsis of the film from Focus Features says, “As the beloved Crawleys and their intrepid staff prepare for the most important moment of their lives, a royal visit from the king and queen of England will unleash scandal, romance and intrigue that will leave the future of Downton hanging in the balance.”

The continuation of the show, which ran for six years on PBS in America, had fans excited for more.

Salon writes, “The ‘Downton Abbey’ film exists entirely to serve hardcore fans who would spend time with the Crawleys through many generations. Their numbers are significant enough to have purchased more pre-release tickets than any other 2019 drama in terms of first-day advance sales, according to Fandango.”

It’s clear that fans came out in numbers to support the film, and they weren’t disappointed, it seems. Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the period film en mass:

Fans love the film, but what do film critics think?

For many critics, the film lacked substance.

A writer for The New York Times said, “Lacking the nutritious story lines of the past, the cross-cultural liaisons and the odd inconvenient corpse in Lady Mary’s bedroom, the movie is mainly empty calories.”

Another for The Washington Post said, “Eventfulness and machination have always been the hallmark of ‘Downton Abbey,’ not acting. With the exception of Dame Maggie, whose acerbic character spends much of her time — probably a little too much of her time — dropping caustic zingers, there isn’t much in the way of thespianism here. Everyone looks and sounds and dresses marvelously. ‘Downton Abbey’ is eye and ear candy of the highest order: rich and delicious, but not especially nutritious.”

But don’t let that stop you from seeing it in a theater near you or even spending a night in the castle where they shot the show and movie.

The series’ Facebook page announced Sep. 17, that you, yes you, can book a night at Highclere Castle where they shot the television show.  AirBnb is hosting, so all you have to do is book your ticket.
