‘My Valentine Crush’ Gives Star Closure

By  |

Do you remember a time when Cupid had you in a chokehold, caught between two love interests? Actress Shaquita Smith does.

While filming her upcoming BET+ film My Valentine Crush, Smith experienced a bit of déjà vu. Similarly, to her character Krystal Johnson, Smith was once pushed to choose between two men she adored.

The Wicked City star revealed to HERS magazine that she made a regrettable decision when she was previously caught in a love triangle. Smith admitted, “I chose the wrong person. When I tried to go back, he ended up marrying or being engaged to someone else. He moved on, yeah.”

Smith continued, “And he waited for me. He waited, so that was eating up [on] me. So, I related so much to the movie.”

Who’s crushing and who will get crushed?

Despite knowing the end of Smith’s personal love story, there is still more to discover about Krystal’s in My Valentine Crush. When Xavier (Jeff Logan, Double Cross) cancels Valentine’s Day plans for an out-of-town work assignment, Krystal’s “situationship” with him appears shakier than ever.  Adding insult to emotional injury, her laptop clunks out while she’s working at home. For Krystal to get back online and back to work, she must call the local geek squad.

When help arrives, it’s not the homely computer specialist she thought it would be. Instead, Krystal is rescued by a handsome tech named Darryl (Travis Cure, The Oval) who also happens to be a former classmate. They cross paths again at a Valentine’s Day gathering and spend more time getting to know each other. It eventually seems the two of them are bound by a connection that could potentially disrupt what Krystal believes she has with Xavier.

Krystal soon has a decision to make. Will it be the man who seems very certain of his feelings for her or the one who seems hesitant to commit to spending at least one holiday with her? Despite popular belief, Smith believes that the “obvious choice” may not actually be that easy.

She posed this question, “How do you move away from someone that you’ve known for years for someone you just met?”

Smith thinks that the answers may vary, “You are going to have people who feel, ‘well he [Xavier] didn’t do anything that bad. He told you’. So, you are going to have a variety of debate, what’s good, what’s bad, what’s factual.”

While the love triangle is a major piece of the story, there is so much more to My Valentine Crush, including friendship, comedy, and sizzle. “We have some really hot and spicy moments in this movie. It’s a phenomenal, cute love story,” Smith said.

The New Amsterdam star shared that she will also get to show off her spoken word skills in a Love Jones inspired scene, “There’s a scene that I feel is going to be amazing. I wrote a poem. I do a poetry session and it’s my actual original poetry. It was originally for somebody who did something to me. They allowed me to do it so I’m excited to see how it turned out.”

And as for Smith’s own past heartbreak, the movie offered her some closure. She revealed, “It was therapeutic for me.”

Where have you seen Shaquita before?

My Valentine Crush will be Smith’s debut as a leading lady. However, it’s not her first-time captivating audiences onscreen. The Birmingham native appeared in NCIS: New Orleans, where she played Sara Larrabbe. She was also featured as one of Lance’s (Morris Chestnut) voluptuous paramours in The Best Man: The Final Chapters.
