School is almost out, and summer is fast approaching which means it’s time for that family beach vacation. When you have kids, going to the beach can seem a little daunting, but check out these seven tips on how to make the most out of your family beach visit this year. With a little planning, there’s no reason you can’t have a blast!

Go Early: For one thing this will mean that the beach will not be crowded and you can choose a spot of your liking. With the increased space your children will have more room for their activities and it’ll be easier for you to keep an eye on them without having to scan a throng of people. This way you can go home when it’s time for their afternoon nap.

Take a tent: A tent is essential; it can serve multiple purposes. If your kids tire they can rest or even nap in it. It can even be used as a private space in which your kids can use the portable potty. The latter brings us to another point; buy a folding travel potty and take it to the beach whenever you go. Bathrooms are not always available.

Food Supplies: Bring lots of food and beverages (especially water). Stock the cooler with oranges, apples, juice pops, grapes, chips and other eatables. This is a must. A well-stocked cooler will save you lots of trouble. After all the activity the kids are sure to go hungry and if food is limited, it will be unpleasant. As for water, again bring plenty of it. Freeze three or four bottles so that they remain cold in the heat for a long time. Portable beach tables can be bought and used to eat at the beach – otherwise you’ll have sand all over your food.

Things to play with: Bring a variety of things which your children can use to play. The traditional shovels and pails as well as water guns are all well and good. But also bring the little garden shovels, these are very good for digging holes and erecting great sand castles. Beach balls, a volley ball there is a whole host of options which you can explore.

All the supplies: Chairs for everyone, lots of towels and sunscreen, goggles, hats, sunglasses (with backups), a beach cart and umbrella. These are things without which one cannot go to the beach, especially with kids.

Talk to your kids about being careful: Tell them of the dangers of wandering too deep in the water, drifting with the tide, etc. Set a limit on the depth that they’re allowed to go (navel deep, knee deep etc.).

Enjoy the moment: Your kids won’t be kids forever so after all the planning and packing, don’t forget to stop and enjoy the moment. Build sandcastles, play in the water, throw a ball around. Don’t miss the little moments that make the vacation memorable and worth while.
