Women Make History at 90th Oscars

By  |

While the nominees were still primarily men, the 90th Oscars really worked to put the emphasis on women as much as they could this year. From the Times Up pins to asking all of the female nominees to stand, the focus was continuously placed on the accomplishments of women.

There were several nuances throughout the show such as Jimmy Kimmel’s opening speech where he said,  “It is a great honor to be here among so many talented women and men.” This sentence may sound a little odd because the phrasing that most of us are used to hearing is “men and women,” but this conscious decision to reverse the gender order in a sentence in order to put women first was repeated throughout the night.

The night also featured Greta Gerwig, who is the first woman to be nominated for Best Director in eight years, and only the fifth woman ever to be nominated in this category. This was also the first year in which a woman, Rachel Morrison, has been nominated for Cinematography. Octavia Spencer is now the first African American actress to receive two consecutive Oscar nominations. And, Meryl Streep continues her reign as the most nominated actor of all time with 21 nominations now under her belt.

Check out the rest of the women who are making art and history and were nominated at this year’s 90th Anniversary Academy Awards. And check out how long this list is! Let’s keep going!
