Turn Trash into Fashion Treasures
By Kylie Kaufman
Plastic, aluminum and newspapers are the most commonly recycled products, but one Miami-based sports apparel line is recycling abandoned fishing nets and turning them into luxury clothes. 600 thousand tons of fishing net is dumped into the ocean each year, destroying our ocean and ecosystem. The brand new luxury sportswear line, 2-DG, is committed to help clean up the ocean and turn the pollution into beautiful, colorful fabrics. 2-DG’s apparel is created from 100% recycled materials by turning the lesser known recyclable textile into yarn for high-tech clothing.
2-DG’s founder, Shail Shah, is continuing to advocate for the protection and prosperity of our environment. “To help save our planet and clean up the environment, 2-DG has partnered with a textile company that has made it their mission to re-purpose materials that would typically end up in a landfill or in the ocean,” Shah explained. This new way of making yarn results in beautiful, luxury material while benefiting the environment.
By using these new techniques, 2-DG is working to:
Save Marine Animals – Cleaning up the fishing nets saves hundreds of thousands of marine animals, such as sea turtles, dolphins, whales, seabirds and fish. These marine animals frequently get caught in the “ghost nets” and die, causing a global threat to marine life.
Lower Carbon Footprint – The transformation process of using recovered fishing nets to make new fabrics requires half of the steps versus a conventional chemical process. As a result, there are significant savings in water, energy and CO2 emissions.
Save Natural Resources – Every 10,000 tons of recycled material saves an estimated 70,000 barrels of oil over non-recycled material.
Preserving the environment isn’t the only task on 2-DG’s mission list. They also supports skin cancer prevention through their SPF 50+ UV protection system and by donating percentages of each sale to the Lampidis Cancer Foundation. A key goal of 2-DG is to help its customers feel confident in knowing that they are wearing the finest quality product while also protecting themselves, preserving the environment, and helping find a cure for cancer.
