‘Timeless’ Wedding Collection and Questions: Zuri Bridal

By  |

Wedding designer Jordan “Zuri” Ewing and her father during the grand opening of her shop.

At 8-years-old, Jordan Ewing’s father used to watch her cutting and redesigning her doll’s dresses, like a mini Miuccia Prada. Seventeen years later, she is cutting up dresses professionally.

The 25-year-old recently opened ZURI Bridal in metro Atlanta, Ga, with intentions to guide future brides throughout the sometimes stressful process of finding their dream wedding dress. Jordan Zuri Ewing grew up with dyslexia, and it was not until she began to fall in love with design and doodling dresses that she truly felt as though she had found her place in the world.

At the grand opening of her store on Friday, June 22, 2018, she expressed that she had an option between choosing a typical secure career or following her passion. Ultimately, Ewing knew that she would not be happy if she settled for another path. Surrounded by her friends and family who support this dream, she took guests on a tour of her bridal shop, which included professional sewing machines upstairs.

Last year, she graduated from Savannah College of Art And Design in Atlanta, Georgia with a BFA in fashion design and has since opened her own appointment-only bridal shop in Dunwoody, Georgia.  The dresses in her collection have been featured in “Vogue” twice as well as on a prestigious runway in Vancouver.

Growing up, many young girls fantasize about their wedding day, especially what they will be wearing on such a monumental occasion. At ZURI, Ewing says she aims to provide customers with a one-on-one experience with a designer who strives to please each bride-to-be.

Like her shop, each line has significance, being named after her mother and grandmother. In fact, the gowns in Ewing’s Timeless Collection are inspired by her grandparents’ love for one another during their 75-year marriage.

We also had a chance to sit with the designer and ask her for her opinion on these pressing wedding preparation concerns.

What are some tips you would give to brides choosing a wedding dress?

  • Everyone kind of has a vision of what they want, and not sticking with that vision usually proves to be a problem. People often feel obligated to bring all of their bridesmaids with them to pick a dress, but sometimes it is easier to stick with your own style and follow your heart when you have fewer people there trying to influence your decision. Your gown is something that you will keep forever, and it should make you feel confident, like the most beautiful woman in the world. If you aren’t happy with your dress, it will show, so you shouldn’t feel pressured to please the people in your bridal party if it means not choosing your dream dress.

Who should a bride-to-be bring with her to her dress fitting?

  • Personally, I think the bride should bring between 3-5 of the most important people in their lives. The bride should never feel guilty about not inviting everyone in the bridal party to the dress fitting, because the purpose of having those people there is really to support you if/when the process gets stressful. Usually, the fewer people, the better because when there is a lot of people, there is a higher chance for drama which could put a damper on the mood. That will breed frustration, anger and stress which could deter from finding your dream dress.

What has been your favorite gown that you’ve recently seen? Kat Von D recently got married in a red dress, have you seen that?

  • I love when brides do pop colors because it’s unexpected! I like seeing people confident enough to follow their heart when it comes to selecting a dress. A lot of brides in other countries wear colorful dresses to their weddings, and it’s beautiful.

Do you currently have any colored gowns in your collection?

  • As of right now, no, but all of them can be customized. So, if you come to me with a hot pink gown in mind, I’ll ask you if you’re sure, but if that’s what you really want, we can make it.

How about different cultural themes for weddings? Have you worked with African fabrics or tried to integrate the Asian kimono into any of your gowns?

  • We haven’t yet, but that is definitely something I would be interested in doing. I’m always up for a new challenge when it comes to learning how to design something new. My main vision is to ensure that the bride is comfortable in what she is wearing; I want her to get exactly what she wants for her big day. Choosing a dress is an experience, and it’s an important experience to have. I would never try to force a dress on a client because I know that if they aren’t happy with it, then it will show. The bride’s comfort is the most important thing to me.

How much do you charge for a wedding dress?

  • The price of our gowns begins at $1,800, and they go up from there. Our price range for the TIMELESS Collection goes from $1,800 to $4,500 give or take, and you can also go with a custom dress. The price of a custom gown all depends on the embellishments and materials that go into it.
What is the difference between Zuri and other bridal stores?
  • Here at Zuri Bridal, I offer a complete experience to ensure that each bride’s vision comes to life. Every bride has the opportunity to tour the showroom and consult one-on-one with the designer. Every step of the process is made enjoyable and memorable, while guaranteeing each bride’s happiness.
Do you design all the gowns yourself or do you have a team that helps you?
  • Currently, I design everything in my store. However, I do have a small team that helps bring my designs to life.
What inspired you as a bridal fashion designer to create timeless looks?
  • My timeless bridal collection is a tribute to my grandparent’s era. This collection accentuates the romantic, ethereal feeling of a more classically glamorous period. My bridal gowns embody a timeless, romanticized aesthetic, with an emphasis on classical silhouettes, fine laces and intricate beading.
What is discussed during the consultations for each bride-to-be?
  • During the consultation, I get to learn each bride’s story, vision, and direction. This is when I hear each bride’s inspiration for their dresses. These consultations help aim me in the right direction for the appointment, minimizing frustrations and maximizing appointment times.
