Study: Going Out Twice Per Week Improves Health

A new study at the University of Oxford showed that women should go out with girlfriends twice a week to improve their health. The study revealed steps women need to take to achieve happiness in all aspects of their lives. The researchers noted only 2 out of 5 women can actually go out with their girlfriends once a week, and even less often if they have families to care for.

Robin Dunbar, a psychologist and head of the study, reported that women’s overall health and well-being is improved when they get together with four best friends twice a week in meetings where they “do things.” According to the study, the list of “things” included drinking, gossiping and talking about their own passionate topics.

Cathy Gonzales is a family nurse practitioner at MD Weight Loss Clinic, which uses a combination of education, customized weight loss plans, prescription medications and lifestyle modifications to help patients lose weight and get healthier. 1. What’s the perfect excuse women have to go out twice a week with friends?

Just tell them, “Doctors orders.” Let’s face it, you wouldn’t skip an important doctor’s appointment, but going out with the girls is optional, right? Well, it shouldn’t be. Make time, schedule it in and don’t let anything get in the way.

2. What are the health benefits of going out with girlfriends?

In the study, they found that women who go out with friends twice a week have a stronger immune system, decreased anxiety and recover faster from illness. Women with a strong social support network are healthier and happier.

3. Why is laughter the best medicine?

Laughter is a miracle drug. Laughter helps to generate the necessary endorphins for happiness and well-being, like Oxytocin, which increases feelings of love, trust and Serotonin, which is the key hormone of happiness. Serotonin also regulates your mood, prevents depression, thwarts irritation and makes you feel happy and sociable. And happy people are just healthier. So, go out, have fun and be happy. You deserve it.

4. Why don’t most women go out with their friends often enough?

Guilt. Women have stressful, busy lives and put everyone else first. While this self-sacrifice of putting others needs before your own may seem noble, it can have insidious effects. Women who are unhappy, depressed and stressed aren’t effective caregivers for themselves or others. It’s important to take time to fill your cup, so that you can then fill others. Trust me, your family will appreciate a happier and healthier you. So, for their sakes and yours, take a little time for yourself.

5. What can busy moms and working moms do to make going out with girlfriends a reality?

Plan it out ahead of time and write it in your schedule. Treat it like you would an important doctor’s appointment. If you start to feel guilty, remind yourself that you’re doing this for your health, and your health and happiness is important, not just for you, but for your family.
