Six Ancient Beauty Secrets to Add to Your Modern-Day Routine

By  |

Throughout time, natural products have been used for health and beauty purposes. Many of these natural products can still be used today to help heal, beautify, and moisturize your skin. Consider adding these six ancient beauty secrets to your skin care routine.

Rose water is a sweet smelling product, and is frequently used to clean and hydrate the skin. Use of rose water is said to prevent premature aging, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and tighten the pores, leaving behind smooth and soft skin. Rose water contains vitamins A and E and has anti-inflammatory properties.

The ancient Greeks used lemon juice to lighten their tresses. Lemon juice works in conjunction with the sun to bring out natural blonde colors. This lightening ingredient can be used to help even skin tone by fading age spots and other dark skin patches. Use lemon juice with caution, especially prior to going outside during the day. Lemon and other citrus fruits and juices make your skin more susceptible to the sun’s rays, which can actually increase the sun’s damage to the skin.

Rooibos has long been used in Africa to treat skin conditions. The red leaves of the rooibos bush can be brewed into a tea used on the skin to soothe, refresh, and protect the skin. Red tea is full of antioxidants, Vitamin C, and quercetin, which helps with collagen production.

Green Tea, a popular tea, has long been used in Asian cultures. Full of antioxidants, green tea fights the free radicals responsible for premature aging and may even revive dead skin cells. Use green tea as part of your skin care routine to target wrinkles and soften the skin.

Dead Sea Salt has long been used to soften and rejuvenate the skin. Use of this salt is said to alleviate eczema and psoriasis. Make your own sea salt scrub by mixing together equal parts of a fine-grain sea salt and olive oil, another long used beauty ingredient.

Egyptians also took milk baths, which are said to improve skin texture and increase the skin’s hydration. The lactic acids in milk help to remove dead skin cells, diminish the appearance of scars, and pump up the production of collagen, which helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles. To use, add 2 cups liquid or powdered milk to a warm bath and soak 20-30 minutes.
