Senator Receives 3,000 Coat Hangers Ahead of Kavanaugh Vote

By  |

Abortion rights activists have been sending trying to send a message to the Senate, one coat hanger at a time.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) has received nearly 3,000 coat hangers in the past few months, in an act of protest against the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. While Collins has been quiet on what decision she would make when it comes to voting for or against Kavanaugh, her stance in the past has often reflected an opposition to striking down the decision made during Roe v. Wade. And while Kavanaugh has stated during his confirmation hearings that he believes the landmark case to be a “settled law,” many abortion rights activists remain unconvinced.

This doubt largely comes from the face that Kavanaugh was nominated by President Trump, who vowed during his campaign to nominate judges to the Supreme Court that would significantly roll back the law. In an interview with Chris Wallace during his campaign, Trump said, “Well, if we put another two or perhaps three justices on, that’s really what’s going to be — that will happen and that will happen automatically in my opinion because I am putting pro-life justices on the court.”

The coat hanger remains a historic symbol of the bloody and dangerous methods that some back-alley “doctors” would use to enact abortions in the years before the Roe v. Wade decision.

Like Collins, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) remains quiet on which way she will vote in the upcoming Supreme Court decision. These more centrist votes are considered key, as Democrats will require a more bipartisan unification if they want to block Kavanaugh’s swearing in.
