Oprah Won’t Let Trump ‘Wrinkle’ Her Time

By  |

Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, directed by Oscar-nominee Ava DuVernay, stars two-time Academy Award nominee Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Which; Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit; Emmy nominee Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who, and Storm Reid in the leading role as Meg Murry.

In the movie, Mrs. Which (Winfrey) is one of three guardian angels (“The Mrs.”) who guide Meg on a journey to rescue her scientist father.  The movie, based on a 1962 novel by the same name, is about being a source of light in a world filled with darkness.  Similarly, the movie’s theme may have inspired Oprah’s comments regarding her own, real-life encounter with darkness, or negative comments.

Oprah responds to moniqueDuring a recent interview with Global Grind about the film, Oprah was asked why she hasn’t responded to the negative comments about her by Donald Trump or Mo’Nique. When asked, “Why do you continue to take the high road? Why don’t you address it?” she said responding to either of them as a warrior of light is “impossible” for her:

“It’s impossible. It’s a law that if you meet negative with negative, you will just have a combustive negative force of energy. You can’t meet negative energy where it is. You have to rise above it. You have to transcend it. You have to be the light. It only takes a little bit of light to banish the darkness. It takes a lot of darkness to overcome the light. It takes just a little bit of light, and we are warriors of the light. I would never stoop to try to meet somebody where they are negatively. Don’t care who they are.”

After Oprah’s remarks on 60 Minutes about America’s political divide during Donald Trump’s presidency, Trump tweeted, “Just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point I knew very well, interview a panel of people on 60 Minutes. The questions were biased and slanted, the facts incorrect. Hope Oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others!”

She had never responded to his comments directly and has only mentioned the remarks when asked by interviewers. When Jimmy Kimmel asked about the president’s remarks, she said she never spent “a second” thinking about it. “You don’t win by meeting any kind of negativity head-on.”

A Wrinkle in Time will be in theaters on March 9th.
