Oprah Winfrey to Help Abrams Make History

By  |

Last than a week until elections, Oprah Winfrey will join Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams on the campaign trail Thursday, November 1.

Running against Secretary of State of Georgia, Brain Kemp (R), Abrams will be appearing in Marietta and Decatur, Ga., with Winfrey for two separate town halls. If Abrams wins governor of Georgia, she will be the first female African-American governor in U.S. history.

“Oprah Winfrey has inspired so many of us through the years with her unparalleled ability to form real connections and strengthen the bonds of family and community,” Abrams said in a statement Wednesday. “I am honored to have Oprah join me for uplifting and honest conversations with voters about the clear choice before us in this election and the boundless potential of Georgians.”

On “The Daily Show” with Trevor Noah, Abrams highlighted the political plan she seeks to enact as governor, such as creating more jobs, criminal justice reform, and a better education system. The Yale law school grad said, “No matter what race you are, you want a good governor.”

Will Ferrell and his wife, Viveca Paulin-Ferrell, joined the campaign this past weekend, going door-to-door to support Abrams’ campaign. Former President Barack Obama will hold a rally on Friday at Morehouse College in Atlanta for Abrams. Former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), rapper and actor Common, and actress Rahsida Jones have also visited the state to campaign for Abrams.

During the 2016 presidential elections, democratic nominee Hillary Clinton got 45% of the state vote. Abrams will obviously have surpass that margin in a state that has favored conservative platforms.
