Is the Kardashian Scandal Proof that Journalists Lack Humanity?

By  |

“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

Now, remove the word, “scientists” from this famous “Jurassic Park” quote and replace it with media, press or journalists.

It has never been the priority of the press to worry about the possible negative effects their news may have on a particular person. Countless scandals have been unmasked by the press without regard to the aftermath they cause such as splitting up families, swaying the popular view, etc.

However, in regards to the recent Tristan Thompson and Khloé Kardashian scandal, should the media, TMZ in particular, have shown a bit more restraint and compassion in releasing such traumatic information so close to Kardashian’s due date?

Although unconfirmed, it is being speculated that the stress of this recently uncovered cheating scandal may have sent Kardashian into premature labor since her due date wasn’t until the end of the month. Kardashian gave birth only a few days after learning about Thompson’s infidelity.

As stated by countless websites, parenting books and doctors, severe stress can bring on premature labor, and according to prematurity research, premature babies “face more health risks than do those born at 39 or 40 weeks, for instance. “Premature” is usually defined as birth before the gestational age of 37 weeks. Babies born in late-preterm are still considered three times more likely to die in the first year of life than full-term babies are.”

So, when the risks of the news scandal aren’t simply that someone may get hurt emotionally, but the potential health problems to an eight-month pregnant woman and her baby, is releasing the scandalous news worth the cost? Or does the press simply not care about the cost?

In a TMZ video, host and cast member, Harvey Levin and Charles Latibeaudiere can be seen joking and almost taking credit for Kardashian going into early labor based on the cheating scandal they released showing that they were fully aware of the potential consequences that ended up coming to pass and chose to release the scandalous video anyways.

The real kicker though is the speculation that not only did TMZ release these videos without regards to the health effects it may and did cause to Kardashian and her new baby, but they may have been holding onto the video since October, waiting until the most dramatic moment to release them (towards the end of her pregnancy) when it would cause the most damage. In this instance, the press wasn’t just neglectful but almost vengeful.

In an industry that revolves around reporting human events and behavior, TMZ’s actions bring forward the question, “has journalism lost its sense of humanity?”
