Surprise: Donald Glover

Donald Glover at 2017 Emmys

Donald Glover had two noteworthy wins the evening of the Emmys: First, he won Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for the “B.A.N.” episode of “Atlanta,” beating Emmy comedy favorite “Veep,” nominated three times in that category. In doing so, Glover became the first African-American man to win the Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series in the history of the Emmys. Secondly, he won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, the first person of color to do so since 1985. He stayed witty during his acceptance speech, saying “I want to thank Trump for making black people number one on the most oppressed list. He’s the reason I’m probably up here.” Glover often jokes in his acceptance speeches: Earlier in January 2017, during the Golden Globes as he was accepting his award for Best TV Series: Musical or Comedy, he thanked rap group Migos for writing “Bad and Boujee,” which he called “the best song ever.”
