Snub: “Westworld”

Like “Stranger Things,” “Westworld” was another fan and critic favorite that came up short. Though it kept the internet abuzz with fan theories while on air, at the Emmys “Westworld” tied with “Saturday Night Live” for most nominations of the night at 22 but didn’t win any of them. Other newcomer dramas won in the categories in which “Westworld” was nominated. Sterling K. Brown from “This Is Us” won the Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series over Anthony Hopkins and “The Handmaid’s Tale” won several different drama categories. One big upset of the night was Ann Dowd winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her icy, chilling portrayal of Aunt Lydia in “The Handmaid’s Tale” over Thandie Newton’s fan-favorite Mave in “Westworld.” In her acceptance speech, Dowd’s tearful gratitude at being recognized at 61 for work she’s been doing for decades won over the hearts of people who detested her Aunt Lydia character.
