Does It Pay to Work in Fashion?

By  |  0 Comments

We’ve all seen movies like, “The Devil Wears Prada, (if you haven’t, you need to) where the fashion industry is painted as a glamorous lifestyle full of free designer clothes, trips to Paris, and a big enough salary to afford a luxurious Manhattan apartment. Is this simply a Hollywood portrayal of the fashion industry, or is there some truth to the glamour?

At the beginning of the year, Fashionista conducted an anonymous survey which nearly 3,000 people who work in fashion completed. According to Fashionista, the participants were asked to give, “details about their titles, companies, gender, location, years of experience and, of course, salaries. They spanned areas including design, styling, retail, PR, development, marketing, photo, editorial and advertising at companies like Nordstrom, Tiffany & Co., Condé Nast, Marc Jacobs and Ralph Lauren, as well as smaller firms with under 25 employees.”

The survey respondents’ experience in fashion ranged from only a year to over 20 years in the business. While some made under $25,000 a year, there were a few who make over $500,000.
