Crazy Rich Asians the Most Successful Rom-Com in Nine Years

By  |

Some have said that the romantic comedy is a dying film genre, but “Crazy Rich Asians” is still exceeding all expectations.

Staying at the top of the box office charts for three weekends in a row, Crazy Rich Asians has amassed $117 million since the end of the Labor Day weekend, making it the top-selling rom-com since 2009’s The Proposal, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.

The film has also become the top contender for Labor Day ticket sales in general, beating out Amy Schumer’s 2015 comedy Trainwreck.

All of this financial success comes on the heels of Crazy Rich Asians’ many other accolades, including a Rotten Tomatoes “Certified Fresh” score of 93%. Crazy Rich Asians is also the first American film to feature an all Asian-American cast since The Joy Luck Club in 1993.
