Celebs React to Trump’s Streep Tweets
On Twitter, just before dawn, President-elect Donald Trump, called acclaimed actress Meryl Streep and “overrated” actress and Hillary Clinton “flunky.” Trump’s tweet was in response to an acceptance speech Streep gave at the Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 8.
Although she did not mention Trump by name, Streep made direct reference to him, saying, “It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it and I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie, it was real life.”
She was referring to New York Times investigative journalist Serge Kovaleski, a disabled reporter who suffers from arthrogryposis, which restricts movement in his limbs. Kovaleski co-authored a 2001 story for The Washington Post that claimed to have witnessed people in Jersey City, N.J., allegedly celebrating the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York. During a Republican primary speech in Alabama on Nov. 21, 2015, Trump cited that story as evidence that he saw on television “thousands and thousands” of people in New Jersey celebrate the terrorist attacks.
Once Trump’s claim as a witness to this was discredited, he apparently mocked Kovaleski’s disability during the speech by contorting his arms and slurring his words. When Streep, who supported Hillary Clinton for president, mentioned Trump’s mocking gestures as inappropriate, Trump took to Twitter to declare his disapproval.
To that rebuttal, author Stephen King made his disapproval public on Twitter.
Meanwhile, others chose a animated memes.
