No Bail, No Freedom: Bill Cosby Sentenced to 3-10 years

By  |

Bill Cosby was sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault in April 2018.

The 80-year-old comedian and television star was convicted for drugging and raping Andrea Constand in 2004 at his home. While his advanced age and deteriorating health led many to speculate as to whether or not he would actually face any jail time, Judge Steven O’Neill noted, “This is a serious crime he was convicted for. This is a sexual assault crime.”

The judge upheld the state’s finding to classify Cosby as “sexually violent predator,” a lifetime designation that would lead to counseling and community notification. The judge also denied him bail before Cosby was escorted out of the courtroom in handcuffs.

Ten women who had accused Cosby of sexual abuse, including Ms. Constand, were in the courthouse at his sentencing. Cosby’s wife, Camille, was not present. In her victim impact statement, Constand said, “Bill Cosby took my beautiful, healthy young spirit and crushed it.”

He is currently being housed in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Eagleville, Pennsylvania. He will have to serve at least two years and nine months of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
