For one Honduran asylum seeker, the last time she may have seen her daughter was at the Mexico-America border. Commanded by a border patrol agent, she put her 2-year-old daughter on the ground. As soon as the little girl slipped away from her mother’s loving arms and her feet touched the ground, she began  to weep in fear. This image taken by photographer John Moore became the face of the realities of Trump’s zero tolerance policy.

This coming week, 132 cities across the country will hold protests against the Trump administration. The outrage felt by American citizens and people around the world  against the “zero tolerance” policy that’s separating families will be expressed via protests at city centers, state capitols, and the main demonstration will be in at Lafayette Square in Washington on June 30.

According to a statement from Karthik Ganapathy, a co-organizer of the demonstration, to The Washington Post, “The Trump administration is trying to dissuade people from coming to our southern border by administering this unimaginable cruelty to send a message. [Attorney General] Jeff Sessions has been clear about this. So we want to send a strong message and put pressure on the Trump administration to change this policy.”

Since April, more than 2,000 immigrant children have been separated from their families and placed in a border patrol processing center in McAllen, Texas. According to Reuters News, parents who crossed the border are held in federal jails, “while their children are moved into border shelter facilities under the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, a Department of Health and Human Services agency.”

When the policy was first implemented in April, Sessions warned that those illegally entering the country “will not be rewarded, but will instead be met with the full prosecutorial powers of the Department of Justice.”

A recent survey shows that nearly 60 percent of Americans oppose President Trump’s separation of immigrant families under his zero tolerance policy. However, a Reuters/Ipsos national poll released today showed that 28 present of Americans support the separations. While a majority of Americans clearly oppose the policy, 55 percent of GOP voters support it.

President Trump continues to blame the democrats for separating immigrant families, claiming they don’t care about crime and could end the separation at a moment’s notice. The policy has caused uproar from every side of the political spectrum, and every living first lady (Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, Hilary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Rosalynn Carter) has spoken out against the policy. Former First Lady Laura Bush called the policy “immoral” and “cruel.”

While many try to find a solution to this humanitarian crisis, it is ultimately up to the White House administration and President Trump to reconnect children with their parents and loved ones.
