15 Head-to-Toe Uses for Coconut Oil This Fall

By  |

Fall weather brings colorful crunchy leaves, cozy sweaters, bonfires and seasonal sweet treats to the forefront of your mind. Unfortunately, the crisp weather also brings dry skin, dehydrated hair and chapped lips to our attention. The good news is the cure-all is likely no further than a trip to your local grocery store.

Coconut oil has risen in popularity, so it lines the shelves in the health and cooking oil sections in most stores. It has a creamy and thick texture at room temperature, but it melts into a luscious liquid at 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Try the remedies below to soothe your entire body head-to-toe this season.

HAIR

  1. Melt coconut oil and rub it into your scalp during or after your shower to prevent dandruff and a flaky scalp.
  2. Lather the melted oil into your hair during your shower or bath to add moisture and shine back into your tired locks. Let it soak in for three to five minutes before rinsing it out.
  3. Smooth the oil on specific areas to tame frizz and fly-aways in your hair.

FACE

  1. Save money on expensive eye cream by using coconut oil instead. Apply the oil under your eyes to clear up bags and dark circles.
  2. Use the oil as a facial cleanser, or apply it on a cotton ball or pad to remove even the toughest waterproof eyeliner.
  3. Rub a little oil inside your nostrils to relieve allergy symptoms like a dry, runny nose.

MOUTH

  1. Relieve your chapped, cracked lips by applying room-temperature coconut oil as lip balm.
  2. Freshen your breath, whiten your teeth and maintain healthy gums by gargling with a spoonful of coconut oil. Oil pulling, or swishing the oil between your teeth for 10 to 20 minutes, removes toxins and pulls germs and bacteria that cause plaque and cavities from your gums.

SKIN

  1. Apply coconut oil as a topical treatment to prevent stretch marks and blisters from forming from scars.
  2. Moisturize dry knees and elbows with coconut oil.
  3. Mix your own sugar or salt scrub by combining one of the two with coconut oil for exfoliation.
  4. Pour coconut oil on as shaving cream. The oil will keep your razor cleaner than regular shaving cream and your legs will be much softer.
  5. Use the oil for bruises, sunburn and bug bites to remove pain and itchiness.
  6. Lessen the appearance of cellulite by using coconut oil consistently on these areas.

NAILS

  1. Rub coconut oil on cracked cuticles, and into nails to make manicures and pedicures last even longer.

Refined coconut oil is okay for topical external application, but go for organic unrefined coconut oil for cooking and internal use. The unrefined oil is a higher quality, contains the most antioxidants and has the most benefits for you.
